Our Trustees
One of Sunderland’s longest serving charities is appealing for skilled professionals to join its Board of Directors, as it moves to expand its services in Sunderland and County Durham.
The YMCA Wearside Ltd is calling on people with professional experience and skills to join the Board of Directors who will play an important part in steering the charity at this crucial stage in its development. The charity, which employs around 40 staff and has annual revenue of over £2m, is based on four sites at Sunderland, Chester – Le – Street and Fence Houses and provides services to young people from these and other premises in the City.
The YMCA has been active in the City of Sunderland since 1872 and has established a strong reputation for housing vulnerable young people as well as training opportunities that meet the needs and challenges faced by young people in today’s society.
“The YMCA has a vision to increase our work with young people across the City of Sunderland, South of Tyne and County Durham areas. Our main aim is to support young people from dependence to independence and help them to build a future by empowering them to make important decisions about their lives. Overall we aim to offer an opportunity of a better way of life to young people. We acknowledge that young people need more than just supported housing in order to move forward in their lives. For this reason we provide training and education as well”.
Joining us as a Board member or special adviser affords a great development opportunity for people to use skills from their ‘professional lives’ to help drive YMCA Wearside Ltd forward. In return they will get a great deal of satisfaction from knowing they are making a difference to the lives of many.”

“With the support and enthusiasm of our volunteer board and dedicated staff team I have seen YMCA Wearside Ltd develop its high quality services for disadvantaged young people to a very high standard. We are at a pivotal and exciting point in our development and seek to strengthen and broaden the skills and knowledge of the Board of trustees. As an inclusive Christian movement, we provide our services to all, irrespective of gender or faith. The volunteer Board and advisers contribute their know-how and skills towards our goal of seeing every young person accessing our services develop to their full potential.”
